Strategic Philanthropy for the Arts 2026 – Memory and Future

The third edition of the Strategic Philanthropy for the Arts forum took place in Lugano on 23 October 2026.

It explored the enduring tension, and the creative partnership, between two of the most powerful forces in the arts: Memory and Future. Memory preserves the stories, identity and experience of past generations. The future calls artists to break boundaries and imagine new realities. The forum’s guiding idea was that these are not opposing forces but vital companions, and that the role of philanthropy is to support both in equal measure.

The first panel, “The Myth of Ulysses: The Memory of the Past, the Desire for the Future”, brought together voices from cinema, theatre, visual arts, museums and cultural institutions. They discussed how the arts both preserve cultural heritage and make room for new, boundary-pushing expression, and how philanthropy helps tradition and innovation coexist and thrive. The second, “The Intergenerational Transition: Bridging Tradition and Innovation”, looked at how philanthropy can foster exchange between generations, so that the wisdom of the past is passed on to future artists and philanthropists without stifling innovation.

A representative of the FAIR Foundation took part in the forum. The questions it raised are close to the Foundation’s own work in Ticino, where supporting young musicians and safeguarding cultural heritage go hand in hand.
